The Kensington SD4880P USB-C docking station emerges as our standout choice for 2024 among driverless docking solutions, significantly advancing beyond traditional counterparts.
While most docking stations reviewed exhibit typical features such as 1Gbe ports, dual HDMI/DisplayPort outputs, and occasional USB-A/USB-C PD ports, this device sets a new benchmark. It distinguishes itself with 2.5Gbe ports, Quad-Video capabilities, extensive USB-A and USB-C connectivity, along with notable additions like an SD card reader and a secure laptop tethering feature.
In terms of both price and functionality, this dock unquestionably leads the pack, making it an unparalleled selection for those seeking a sophisticated and feature-rich docking solution.

Connectivity
Foremost among our accolades is the sheer capability of this device. It boasts a total of 10 USB ports, including an additional USB-C port for laptop connectivity. On the front, there are two USB-C ports (30W and 15W), alongside two USB-A ports (4.5W), a 3.5mm headphone jack, an SD card reader (UHS-II, SD4.0), and a 100W USB-C port for the laptop connection. Meanwhile, the rear of the device is equipped with 4 USB-A ports (4.5W each), 2 USB-C ports (15W each), two display port connectors, two HDMI connectors, 2.5Gbe Ethernet, and a 20V power connection.
While we were impressed by the extensive array of connections, we felt there could have been improvements in terms of additional HDMI/DisplayPort connections and more robust USB charging capabilities across all ports of the device. Nevertheless, users will find that the ample connectivity provided meets the majority of their needs effectively.
There is some display performance variance based on the desired video output of the device. While largely this will be limited by your connected hardware, the dock can output 4K@30Hz with 2 displays and 4 displays at 120Hz at 1080p.
Compatibility
This device is tailored for use in the Windows environment, particularly benefiting laptops that support up to 100W charging and are compatible with USB-C 3.2 Gen2 connections. Users have the option to install Kensington DockWorks software for additional configuration.
The dock and Kensington DockWorks supports Windows ARM, Windows x86, and Windows x64 platforms. During our testing on new Snapdragon XElite Mobile processors running Windows 11 on ARM, we encountered no installation or compatibility issues.
Price
This device has an MSRP of USD $299.99. We found it at the time of publishing this device available for USD $298.30 and CAD $432.66. The closest competitors are the Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 4 Dock (CAD$477) and the Targus USB-C Hybrid/Universal 4K Quad Docking station (CAD$329.99). Comparatively, the SD4880P we believe is the best value amongst its competition with an overall better offering.
Unlike many of the other vendors in this category, Kensington sells this docking station from a variety of different resellers rather than directly. The company has an online database of their Canadian-resellers here. Many national retailers like Canada Computers, BestBuy and Amazon are also are listed as resellers.
