OnePlus, a global maker of Android smartphones, tablets and other accessories, is set to have a major launch event on January 23rd for the OnePlus 12. This launch event is expected to announce the release of their latest smartphone devices, which includes launches in the North American markets. According to early reports, releasing these handsets might be pivotal in sales for a stagnating mobile industry. (Updated on 23 JAN.)

OnePlus 12

Overall Specs

This anticipated series flagship features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile processor, Gen Hasselblad Camera with a 64MP 3x periscope lens and impressive support for up to 80W fast charging (50W AIRVOOC wireless charging.) The Chinese high-end versions include up to 24GB of RAM and 1TB of storage (up to 16GB LPDDR5X RAM + 512GB UFS 4.0 ROM in Canada/US) .

Processing Power

In terms of pure processing power, the OnePlus 12 is equipped with an “X7 Independent Visual Processor” co-developed with Pixelworks. According to OnePlus: “The inclusion of the X7 will enable the OnePlus 12 to give full play to OnePlus’ in-house graphics processing algorithms with powerful rendering capability and stunning visual quality, making the gaming experience on the OnePlus 12 realistic, engaging, and smooth beyond belief.”

The main procession is the 3rd Generation Snapdragon 8 Mobile Platform CPU with CPU-Virtulaization.

Battery, Cooling and Display

The device sports an impressive 5400mAh battery in addition to having been cooled with what OnePlus is calling it’s Dual Cryo-velocity VC cooling system. This vapour chamber-based cooling system OnePlus alleges, will dissipate heat more efficiently than previous devices.

The display is one we’re looking forward to seeing. It is a new 2K 120Hz ProXDR Display with LTPO + Hyper Rendering + HyperTouch.

Camera, Audio and the extras

The OnePlus 12 has a suite of three camera imaging sensors (50MP Wide Camera with Sony’s LYT-808 Image Sensor, a 64MP 3x Periscope Telephoto Camera and 114° FOV Ultra-wide Camera.) The cameras are backed by the latest HDR image processing algorithms and the capability to film 4K Dolby Vision video. We’re really looking forward to testing out the 4K Dolby Vision capabilities.

Audio the phone doesn’t pull any extra punches on the surface specs, although it does support Dolby Atmos for Mobile.

There is onboard support for an IR (Infrared Remote) sensor, USB 3.2 and a new 360-degree surround antenna. This is the first time in a long time we’ve seen any device advertise an IR blaster as a feature.

Overall specs

This device is expected to be the more affordable model with mid-range vibes. This will be the first time outside of India and China that the company is anticipated to launch the “R” series of devices targeted towards value-oriented customers. This is similar to the previous “T” series devices the company offered in markets.

The device in the North American market, will offer configurations of up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM with up to 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage.

Power, charging and processor

OnePlus doesn’t seem to have missed a beat with a 100W fast charging port and a 5500 mAh battery. According to the company, this is the largest battery they’ve ever put in a smartphone.

The mobile processor is the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform, which is the earlier generation of Snapdragon 8 processors. Variants are: 8GB+128GB / 16GB+256GB.

Battery, Cooling and Display

The battery is a 5,500mAh device with support for up to 100W charging using SUPERVOOC. This is surprising considering it’s more expensive relative to only supporting up to 5400mAh.

The display is anticipated to be a 4th-generation AMOLED ProXDR Display with LTPO4.0. OnePlus like with the OnePlus 12, describes this similarly as “smooth.” It does support up to dynamically 120hz and uses Corning® Gorilla® Glass Victus 2.

OnePlus was short on details as it relates to the cooling system on this device. It doesn’t appear to support the same vapour chamber as it’s more expensive sister.

Camera, Audio and the extras

Unlike its flagship sister, the 12R features a 50MP primary lens (Sony’s IMX890), an 8-megapixel ultrawide lens and a 2MP macro lens. The device is capable of shooting 1080p video with no support for Dolby Vision.

Audio-wise, the 12R has a dual speaker configuration with Dolby Atmos support.

The 12R also supports an Infrared blaster, rear colour temperature sensor, and USB 2.0, though it has dual-nano SIM support. We’re a little disappointed with the USB 2.0 spec.
