The hugely popular Fitbit Ionic has been recalled, affecting nearly 1.693 million devices. These devices which were sold between September 2017 and December 2021, are used for sleep, activity and heart rate monitoring as well as use as a smartwatch. In a statement, the company stated that they are voluntarily recalling these devices as they can “overheat, posing a burn hazard” and are asking users “If you own a Fitbit Ionic, please stop using your device.”
292 incidents reported in Fitbit Recall
In the report from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and from Health Canada, it was indicated that Fitbit has received nearly 300 complaints of injuries or hazards caused by the device. In the United States, Fitbit reported 115 reports of the battery in the watch overhearing and 78 reports of burn injuries.
In Canada and Mexico, regulatory bodies have not indicated that they had received any reports of serious injuries or hazards but relied on the company and external reports in issuing the recall.
